Imagine a wild, green haven in Portland – open to all.

Once a busy working quarry, France Quarry has been reclaimed by nature and transformed into a beautiful green oasis at the heart of Portland. It is now home to thousands of plant and animal species, some incredibly rare, and is cherished by residents and visitors alike for its tranquillity, birdsong, and cool woodland canopy. For many local children, it is the only wooded area where they can explore, play, and connect with nature.

But this much‑loved place is under threat of development. So far, community efforts have helped to stop these plans. Yet with growing pressure for new housing, there is no guarantee that future proposals will be turned down. If they are approved and the Quarry is lost, this unique, living landscape – and everything it means to our community – could never be replaced.

Amazingly, we have a unique opportunity to purchase two acres of the site, protecting it for residents, visitors and the diverse range of animals and plants that call it home. To make this vision a reality, Future Portland has been working hard to raise the money required to purchase the land, cover all associated legal fees and carry out essential maintenance and improvements across the first 12 months. As you can see on the update above, we have now achieved this figure (circa £60,000) – assuming all pledges are paid.

The purchase is now in the hands of the solicitors, which means that unless something unexpected happens, the community should soon own two acres of this critical site.
